String of Pearls

Senecio rowleyanus

$34 5" hanging pot

A cascade of little green beads. Each pearl is a water-storing leaf, so it drinks like a succulent, not a trailing vine.

Living with it

Every one of those pearls is a modified leaf, round to reduce water loss, with a tiny translucent window that lets light in. It’s a succulent that happens to trail, which trips people up: they water it like a pothos and rot the strands.

Treat it like the desert plant it is — bright light, a thorough soak only when the pearls start to look slightly deflated, then let it dry out. Hang it high where the strands can fall and the cat can’t reach; it isn’t pet-safe.
