The Case Against Decorative Pots Without Drainage

That beautiful ceramic pot with no drainage hole is responsible for more plant deaths than any pest or disease. It’s worth saying plainly: a pot without drainage is a slow-motion problem.

Without a hole, excess water has nowhere to go. It collects at the bottom, out of sight, and the roots sitting in it slowly rot. By the time the plant looks unwell above the soil, the damage below is often done.

You don’t have to give up the pretty pot. The trick every nursery uses is to keep the plant in its plastic grow-pot (which has drainage) and set that inside the decorative one as a “cachepot.” Water over a sink, let it drain completely, and drop it back in. You get the look and the plant gets to breathe.
